Evening Lions Club to sponsor golf

outing for active-duty military personnel

By JEFF MEEK

Staff writer

On Oct. 19, the Hot Springs Village Evening Lions Club will sponsor a golf outing for 66 active duty military personnel from the Little Rock Air Force Base.

Those who have been serving in Iraq or Afghanistan within the last six months or who will deploy within the next six months are being invited for a day of golf, food and fun as the Evening Lions Club and Hot Springs Village show appreciation to them.

“At the start of every Evening Lions Club meeting, as we say the Pledge of Allegiance to our beautiful flag, immediately my thoughts are about our brave military men and women serving in the war zones,” said Evening Lions president and ‘Thanks to the Troops’ event director Bob DeVinney.

“While we go about our daily lives, they are over there putting their lives on the line for us. The ‘Thanks to the Troops’ golf outing event is a small expression of our admiration for and support of these courageous troops. Let’s have a huge Village turnout on Oct. 19 to say thanks and show our appreciation to them.”

These 66 military personnel will arrive at the Village East Gate at approximately 9:15 a.m.

They will be met by a welcoming committee and escorted to Balboa Golf Course for a big Village welcome and treated to doughnuts and coffee by the Daughters of the American Revolution before beginning a round of golf at 10 a.m.

Each will also receive a hat, golf balls and tees for their round of golf.

Playing with them will be Village residents who will complete a foursome for the outing – two Villagers with two military guests.

This is not a tournament but, rather, a day of fun for the men and women who serve this nation.

Residents who golf with a military guest will be required to provide loaner clubs for their guest.

Once the golf has been completed, there will be a short tour of the Village, which will be highlighted by a brief stop at the Village Veterans Memorial on DeSoto Boulevard.

From there, they will be bused to Balboa Pavilion for a meal with Village residents which will begin at approximately 4:15 p.m.

The meal will include hamburgers, beans, potato salad and a drink.

The meat will be prepared by Christ of the Hills United Methodist Church senior pastor Dr. Walter Smith who also serves as a chaplain with the Air Force Reserves.

Following the meal, troops will be given a rousing Village “Thank You” as a sendoff as they are bused back to their base.

Tickets for this Oct. 19 golf event and the meal at Balboa Pavilion will go on sale at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 19 at Re/Max of Hot Springs Village office at Ponce and DeSoto.  Golf/meal tickets will be sold on a first-come, first served basis.

Tickets for the golf, which includes free range balls, box lunch and the afternoon meal, will cost $50 each.

Sixty-six of these tickets will be sold. Limit of two tickets per person.

Tickets for the meal only, at $10 each, will also be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Three hundred of these tickets will be sold. Limit of four tickets per person. Balboa Golf Course hole sponsorships will also be available.

The chance to sponsor a hole will first go to Balboa Golf Course residents. Cost will be $50 and can be shared among hole neighbors.

Sponsorship entitles the sponsor to put out one decorated hospitality table with donated snacks, soda or water. No liquor or beer.

Interested Balboa residents should contact Linda Piette by phone at 922-0707 or e-mail at lindapsells@yahoo.com no later than Aug. 13.

Proceeds from this event will be donated to the USO. Members of the Evening Lions Club are proud to host this event and hope the Village will turn out to welcome these military men and women who risk their lives in the defense of this country and its interests.

Tickets are expected to sell out quickly, so mark your calendar and come join the fun on Oct. 19 as Hot Springs Village says ‘Thanks to the Troops.’

As first reported in the Voice last week, the club will sponsor a special day of golf for active-duty military personnel from the Little Rock Air Force Base.

“With the excitement building for the “Thanks to the Troops” VIP golf outing, it is obvious that patriotism is alive and well in the Village.

This is an opportunity to honor just a few of the brave military men and women who represent all of those who serve to keep Americans safe and free.

“This is a rare chance to great, meet and say thanks to these patriots,” said event director Bob DeVinney. “Let’s have a huge turn out to show our appreciation.”

On Oct. 19, 66 active-duty military personnel will arrive from Little Rock and be wel- comed at Balboa Golf Course by interested Villagers and the local Akansa chapter of the DAR.

After time for coffee, doughnuts and an officially greeting, military guests and their golfing partners will start an 18-hole scramble.

“I think this is a wonderful thing the Village is doing,” said director of golf John Paul.

Following the scramble, the personnel will be given a brief tour of the Village which will culminate in meal at Lake Balboa Pavilion.

The meal will include hamburgers, beans, potato salad and a drink.

Tickets for this uplifting event will go on sale at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug, 19 at the Re/Max of Hot Springs Village office at Ponce and DeSoto Boulevard.

Golf/meal tickets will be sold on a first-come, firstserved basis.
